Hans Thoma
Born : 1839Died : 1924
German painter Hans Thoma (1839–1924), born in Bernau in the Black Forest and deceased in Karlsruhe, travelled through several European art centres, from Düsseldorf and Paris to Munich, Frankfurt am Main and Italy.
Before his artistic training, Thoma worked as a clock decorator. He entered the Karlsruhe Academy in 1859, where he studied until 1866 and received instruction, among others, from Ludwig des Coudres. In the 1860s, he worked in Düsseldorf. A long stay in Paris brought him into contact with Gustave Courbet. The encounter with Courbet, according to the source, had a profound influence on his work. He subsequently divided his career between Munich and Frankfurt am Main and travelled in Italy, notably to Merano and Florence.
The works listed by the Art Institute of Chicago offer a view of the range of subjects in his work: the mythological scene Apollo and Marsyas, dated 1888, The Cat, from 1901, and Fountain with Putti in the Garden of the Villa Borghese, from 1880. A sales catalogue also describes a drawing entitled Brunnen, executed in ink and opaque white on paper. The sheet is signed in pencil at the lower right and bears the inscription “Org-Zg.” at the lower left. His career was the subject of the exhibition Hans Thoma, Wanderer zwischen den Welten, presented at the Museum of Arts and Techniques of the 19th Century in Baden-Baden from September 2017 to March 2018.
