Manuel Cargaleiro, born in the Vila Velha de Ródão area in 1927 and deceased in 2024, was a Portuguese painter and ceramic artist. Growing up around a pottery established a lasting engagement with materials. After studying science, he turned towards art and settled in Paris in 1957 while maintaining close connections with Portugal.
The organisation of colour in his paintings often recalls the tiled grids of his ceramics. Motifs and figurative suggestions remain within the predominantly abstract structures. His work extends beyond the individual painting or object into architecture: in 1995 he made the azulejos for the Champs-Élysées–Clemenceau metro station in Paris. A foundation bearing his name was established in 1990, followed by the opening of the Cargaleiro Museum in Castelo Branco in 2005.
This profile brings together identity references for Manuel Cargaleiro and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
