Peeter Snayers (1592–about 1667), a Flemish painter who settled in Brussels in 1628, specialised in the battles and sieges of his time. His large aerial views organise military action through the use of topographical maps. This construction combines historical narrative with a description of the terrain.
The Relief of Lérida (1646), an oil painting on canvas at the Prado, places a general issuing orders in the foreground. Behind him, trumpeters accompany a view of the city and the hill crowned by its cathedral. The Conversion of Saint Paul (1656), at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, addresses another subject. This small oil painting on wood, measuring 19 by 24.2 centimetres, bears the painter’s monogram and date.
This profile brings together identity references for Peter Snayers and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
