The Austrian landscape painter Emil Jakob Schindler, also known as Emil Jacob Schindler, studied in Vienna under the landscape painter Albert Zimmermann after entering the Academy of Fine Arts in 1860. In spring 1864, he exhibited publicly in Vienna for the first time and sold Eine Waldschmiede for 350 florins, an early milestone in his career. In 1873, he travelled to Venice and Dalmatia on a trip funded by the industrialist Friedrich Franz von Leitenberger. In 1881, Schindler received the Reichel Prize, which carried an endowment of 1,500 florins.
Among the paintings mentioned, The Steamboat Station on the Danube opposite Kaisermühlen is dated 1871–1872, or around 1872 according to the source, and is held at the Belvedere Gallery in Vienna. Other works refer to the areas around Plankenberg and Schärfling: Forest Path near Schärfling (1890) and Poplar Avenue near Plankenberg (around 1890) are listed as belonging to the Leopold Museum in Vienna; Autumn Undergrowth at Plankenberg (1889–1890) is attributed to the State Museum of Lower Austria in Sankt Pölten. His work has been the subject, among other things, of publications devoted to the Schule von Plankenberg and Austrian atmospheric Impressionism, as well as poetic realism.
This profile brings together identity references for Emil Jakob Schindler and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
