Karl Otto Götz

The German painter Karl Otto Götz, born in Aachen in 1914 and deceased in Niederbreitbach in 2017, developed an abstract painting practice in which automatism, spontaneous gesture and Informel occupy a central place. Sources also describe his practice of manually rendering images generated at random by machines, an approach that combines impulse and elaboration. During his military service, he learned about radar technology; this experience is linked to his conception of space. After the defeat, he founded the avant-garde journal Meta and established contacts with the Prampolini group in Italy, as well as with artists of Cobra.
In 1952, he exhibited at the Zimmergalerie Franck in Frankfurt with Bernard Schultze, Otto Greis and Heinz Kreutz, under the title “New Expressionists”. Following this exhibition, the four painters formed the group Quadriga. The Giverny series, created between 1986 and 1988 and inspired by Monet’s garden, deploys a broad palette of colours, with the exception of black. In the 2010s, by contrast, Götz conceived large black-and-white compositions. His career includes exhibitions devoted to his work at several German institutions, notably the Städtische Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf in 1984, the Albertinum in Dresden in 1994, the Arp Museum in Remagen in 2010 and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin in 2014. An untitled work from 1953, in mixed media on paper and measuring 250 × 225 mm, bears the signature and date “Götz, 53”; this lot was sold for CHF 1,800 excluding fees.
