Friedrich Gauermann

The Austrian painter Friedrich August Matthias Gauermann, associated with the Biedermeier landscape, whose name is also written Mathias, was born in Scheuchenstein in 1807 and died in Vienna in 1862. The son of the painter Jakob Gauermann, who introduced him to painting, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1822 to 1827. His travels took him to Styria, Tyrol, Salzburg and the Salzkammergut, as well as to Dresden, Munich and Venice. The source characterises his approach as that of a naturalist: Gauermann rejects vedutism and takes an interest in the Flemish Primitives.

In 1861, he became a member of Künstlerhaus Wien. The Lempertz catalogue lists under his name Felsblock an einem Bach, an oil painting on paper mounted on wood, measuring 49 × 37.5 cm. The catalogue entry relates this work to a Reh an einer Quelle dated 1844.

This profile brings together identity references for Friedrich Gauermann and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
