Victor Pasmore (1908–1998), also known as Edwin John Victor Pasmore, is a British artist and architect whose career brings together painting, teaching and the design of works for public spaces. He studies painting part-time at the Central School of Art; his works feature, among other places, in an exhibition held at the Zwemmer Gallery in London in 1934. From 1947, he develops a fully abstract style, giving it form notably through collage and the construction of reliefs.
Teaching occupies an important place in his practice: he teaches at the Camberwell School of Art from 1943 to 1949, then at the Central School of Art from 1950 to 1954. From 1954 to 1961, he teaches at King’s College, University of Durham, in Newcastle upon Tyne, where he develops an art and design course inspired by the Bauhaus «basic course». His work also extends into architectural and urban space. In 1950, he is commissioned to create an abstract mural for a bus depot in Kingston upon Thames. Appointed in 1955 as consulting director of the architectural project of the Peterlee Development Corporation, he designs the Apollo Pavilion, an abstract public-art structure located at the centre of the town plan. He takes part in Documenta II in Kassel in 1959, then represents Great Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1961. He settles in Malta in 1966.
