Franz Roubaud

Born : 1856Died : 1928

Also known as Franz Alexeïevitch Roubaud and Франц Алексеевич Рубо, Franz Roubaud is described as a history and battle painter of the Russian Empire, of French origin. His work combines this historical painting with the creation of large battle panoramas, designed to be presented in specially built buildings. After taking courses at the Odessa Art School, he leaves for Germany in 1877 and studies at the Munich Academy. There he works notably with Carl Theodor von Piloty, Otto Seitz and Wilhelm von Diez, and later with Joseph von Brandt.

After completing his studies, Roubaud settles in Saint Petersburg and works at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, where he teaches from 1903 to 1912. In 1895, he receives a gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. In 1913, he leaves the Russian Empire for Munich and thereafter resides mainly in Germany. He dies in Munich on 13 March 1928.

Among the documented works is Collision of Two Mounted Combatants, an 1888 oil on canvas held at the National Gallery of Athens, measuring 40 × 33 cm. Kosak in Winterlandschaft, dated 1892 and signed, is also an oil on canvas; its dimensions are 620 × 370 mm. Alongside these works in the artist’s oeuvre is his practice of large-scale historical panoramas: Roubaud paints battle compositions whose dimensions require specially built exhibition venues.
