Max Ackermann

The German artist Max Ackermann, born in 1887 and deceased in 1975, develops an increasing interest in abstraction and Constructivism from the 1930s onwards, which he calls “absolute painting”. He studies art in Weimar, Dresden, Munich and Stuttgart, and attends classes taught by Adolf Hölzel. After taking part in the First World War, during which he is wounded, he settles in Stuttgart. In 1928, he takes part in an exhibition at the Kunsthaus Schaller gallery in Stuttgart, alongside Wassily Kandinsky and George Grosz.
The titles Deutschland (1927), Gegenstandslose Komposition (1930) and Konkretes (1932) mark the works mentioned for this period. In 1936, the Nazis ban abstract art, which they call “degenerate art”, and Ackermann’s paintings are removed from the State Gallery of Württemberg. In 1943, a bombing destroys his studio and many works are lost. After the war, he presents his paintings at the first Salon des réalités nouvelles, in Paris in 1946.
The Art Institute of Chicago lists, among other works, Self-Portrait with Banana, dated 1927. Another work, entitled Komposition, is dated 3 November 1962 in the source. In 1952, Ackermann takes part in a conference devoted to painting and music. He receives the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
