Günter Wilhelm Grass (1927–2015), a German writer and artist, developed a practice that brought together the visual arts and literature. He worked as a graphic artist, illustrator and painter while also writing. His artistic training took him to the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied from 1948 to 1952, and then to the Berlin University of the Arts, from 1953 to 1956. He also sought to earn a living through sculpture and printmaking.
In 1955, he became close to Group 47. The following year saw the publication of his first collection of poems, Le Journal des coquecigrues (Die Vorzüge der Windhühner), followed in 1957 by two plays, Tonton (Onkel, Onkel) and La Crue (Hochwasser). These literary milestones accompanied a career in which writing and visual creation went hand in hand. From 1983 to 1986, Grass was president of the Academy of Arts in Berlin. In 1989, Tirer la langue (Zunge zeugen) was published, a work in which he recounts his experience in Calcutta.
The drawing Fische, dated 1983, offers a concrete reference point for his graphic work: an auction catalogue describes it as a red-chalk drawing measuring 42 × 59 cm, signed and dated at the lower right ‘Grass, 83’.
This profile brings together identity references for Günter Grass and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
