László Mednyánszky, known as Ladislav in Slovak collections, was born in Beckov in 1852 and died in Vienna in 1919. He remained attached to the family estate at Strážky, where he spent much of his childhood and his father built him a studio. He returned regularly, while stays in France informed his approach to the landscapes of his home region.
In The Country at the Foot of the High Tatras after Spring Rain, of 1878–79, local motifs meet an atmospheric sensibility shaped by Barbizon. An oil painting, Tatra Mountain Landscape, dated 1890–95, continues his attention to the mountains. His work also included drawings of everyday subjects: Carriages in a Courtyard, in the Hungarian National Gallery, combines pencil and watercolour on paper.
This profile brings together identity references for László Mednyánszky and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
