Born in Tours in 1946, Jean-François Dubreuil has developed paintings based on the transcription of newspapers since the 1970s. He converts the areas occupied by their sections into fields of colour: red corresponds to advertisements and black to photographs. Readable content disappears while the structure of the printed source becomes pictorial material. In 1975 he helped establish Galerie 30, which remained active until 1987.
The Malta Independent No. 2448 25/08/2005 2/2, made in 2005, belongs to the Arithmeum in Bonn. This acrylic painting on canvas mounted on wood retains the precise reference to its source newspaper in its title. His work is also represented in the Albers-Honegger Donation deposited at the Espace de l’Art Concret. His practice brings an everyday information source into dialogue with a vocabulary of geometric surfaces.
