Mario Sironi’s career combines an evolving approach to painting with a wide-ranging practice, from graphic design and stage design to architecture and mural painting, culminating in monumental works and, after the war, more intimate canvases. Born in Sassari in 1885, he died in Milan in 1961. After beginning engineering studies, he abandoned them to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. In the capital, he met Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni and Gino Severini. Based in Milan from 1914, he moved closer to Futurism and formed ties with Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Antonio Sant’Elia.
In the 1920s, his painting remained Futurist but took on metaphysical atmospheres; his palette grew darker, notably in the “Peripheries”. In 1926, he took part in the Novecento Italiano exhibition at the Permanente in Milan. In the early 1930s, Sironi expanded his practice to include graphic design, stage design, architecture and mural painting. His monumental works include Il Lavoro (1933), for the fifth Milan Triennale, and L’Italia fra le Arti e le Scienze (1935), at the University of Rome.
After the war, his painting became darker and more dramatic: the monumental character of the preceding years gave way to a more confined space and small-format canvases. He exhibited, among other places, in Buenos Aires, Madrid and Lausanne. A retrospective was devoted to him in 1965, on the occasion of the 9th Rome Quadriennale.
This profile brings together identity references for Mario Sironi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
