The French painter Eugène Claude developed a body of work devoted primarily to portraiture and still life, with flowers, fruit and animals as subjects. A pseudonym of Jean Claude, born in Toulouse in 1841 and deceased in Asnières-sur-Seine in 1923, he grew up in a family of porcelain merchants and began his career as a porcelain painter. He exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1861, at the age of twenty. The biographical source states that he presented around sixty paintings there over a period of thirty years. A member of the Société des Artistes, he received a second-class medal at the Salon des artistes français in 1895 and an honourable mention at the Paris Universal Expositions of 1889 and 1900. In 1898, he lived and worked at 37, rue Pierre-Fontaine.
Among the works mentioned are Un bouquet de chrysanthèmes, dated 1877, and a Nature morte aux fleurs, signed and dated 1913, described as a large-format oil on canvas. Nature morte aux canards is listed in the collections of the musée d’Orsay, while Fleurs des champs is held at the musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims.
This profile brings together identity references for Eugène Claude and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
