The British painter Keith Vaughan (also known as John Keith Vaughan, 1912–1977) developed a body of work centred on the male nude, landscape—particularly that of Essex—and still life, while his figure studies moved towards increasing abstraction. Born in Selsey, Sussex, he became a boarder at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham in 1921; the art teacher H. A. Rigby encouraged his artistic abilities there. After working at the Lintas advertising agency from 1931 to 1939, he left to devote himself entirely to painting; in 1941, he was conscripted into the Non-Combatant Corps.
The series Assembly of Figures, comprising nine oil paintings made between 1951 and 1976, attests to his enduring interest in groups of figures. In 1951, for the Festival of Britain, he also painted a large mural measuring 3.5 × 22 metres in the Dome of Discovery on London’s south bank; it was destroyed with the pavilion at the end of the year. His solo exhibitions included a presentation of gouaches and drawings at the Reid and Lefevre Gallery in London in 1944, followed by an exhibition of paintings at the Instituto de Arte Moderno in Buenos Aires in 1950. A retrospective was devoted to him at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1962; in 2012, Pallant House Gallery in Chichester presented Keith Vaughan: Romanticism to Abstraction. Works by Vaughan are held in the collections of the Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum, as well as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo and the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto.
