Bartolomeo Schedoni (1578–1615) worked in the courtly circles of Modena and Parma. The son of a mask-maker employed by the dukes, he was sent to Rome in 1595 to train with Federico Zuccaro. He subsequently became court painter to Cesare d’Este in Modena, returning to Parma in 1607 to serve Ranuccio I Farnese.
His painting combines the legacy of Correggio and Parmigianino with attention to the innovations of the Carracci. Alongside major ducal commissions, he produced small devotional pictures. The Holy Family with the Virgin teaching the Child to Read, painted around 1613–1615 and held by London’s National Gallery, gathers its figures closely together in gentle light, creating a scene of domestic intimacy.
This profile brings together identity references for Bartolomeo Schedoni and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
