Robert Heinrich Otto Fröhlich (1869–1940), painter, book creator, copyist and engraver, trained at the Academy in Weimar from 1887 under Leopold von Kalckreuth and Carl Frithjof Smith. After study trips to Italy, he continued his training in Munich from 1898, with a temporary stay in Stuttgart. From 1893, he took part in art exhibitions in Berlin, at the Glaspalast in Munich and in Düsseldorf.
The biographical note reports that he became friends with Rudolf Steiner from 1891 and also maintained friendly relations with Max Beckmann. Among the works attributed to him is a copy of the frescoes of the Wartburg, completed in 1940. A painting entitled “L’essayage”, listed as attributed to Fröhlich and dated circa 1930, is described as an oil on canvas depicting a young woman in a yellow dress on a terrace, with flowering shrubs and a castle in the background. A typewritten note on the back of the stretcher bears the German title “Die Anprobe” and states that the work came from the painter’s estate in Weimar.
This profile brings together identity references for Otto Fröhlich and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
