Carl Gustav Carus (1789–1869), a Saxon physician and painter, brings together artistic practice and reflection on landscape in his career. In Nine Letters on Landscape Painting, published in 1831, he sets out an aesthetic theory of landscape associated with German Romanticism. His body of paintings comprises around 400 works.
A work documented in the Lempertz catalogue, Tor bei einer gotischen Kirche im Mondschein, is described as an oil on cardboard measuring 28 × 38 cm. The catalogue also notes that the painting appeared in a sale organised by Winkel & Magnussen in Copenhagen in 1932.
At the same time, Carus served as president of the Leopoldina in Halle from 1862 to 1869 under the name Cajus II.
This profile brings together identity references for Carl Gustav Carus and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
