Jiang Zhaohe renewed Chinese figure painting by combining ink techniques with a construction of the body informed by Western drawing. His Self-Portrait of 1938 records this attention to the individual. After beginning in advertising in Shanghai, his work addressed poverty and wartime suffering, giving ordinary people a central place within his pictures.
Refugees, made in 1942–1943, belongs to this investigation of collective experience. In A Basket of Spring Sold Throughout the World, painted in 1948, an emaciated flower seller appears in thin clothing. Ink and colour on paper convey her living conditions. Alongside his own creative activity, Jiang taught at the Central Academy of Fine Arts from 1950, passing on his approach to figure painting to a new generation.
This profile brings together identity references for Jiang Zhaohe and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
