Jules Noël, also known as Jules Achille Noël and born Louis Assez Noël, was a French landscape and marine painter whose subjects are rooted particularly in Brittany and Normandy. He painted in these regions from nature, producing landscapes and maritime scenes. Trained in drawing by his father, and later by Louis-Gabriel Charioux in Brest and Jean-Victor Bertin in Paris, he pursued a teaching career alongside his artistic work. After teaching in Saint-Pol-de-Léon, he held a teaching post in drawing in Lorient from 1835 to 1838, moved to Nantes in 1839, and then to Paris in 1845, where he taught at the lycée Henri-IV.
He first exhibited in 1836, at the Salon des beaux-arts de Nantes, with two paintings. From 1840, he took part in almost all the Paris Salons until 1879. His work received a third-class medal in the «Landscape» category in 1853; he was appointed an officier d’Académie in 1870. Several works held in public collections attest to the variety of his subjects. Le Port de Brest, dated 1864 and held at the musée des Beaux-Arts de Brest, is a large-format work on paper mounted on canvas, measuring 155 × 255 cm. Brest, embarcadère de Recouvrance, from 1844, is a hand-watercoloured lithograph on paper. Le Bretagne (1859) is held at the National Maritime Museum in London; Allée de châtaigniers, dated around 1860–1870, is held at the musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper. The musée des Beaux-Arts de Vannes also holds Falaises de Quiberon (1863) and Marine (1877). His practice also included illustration engraving: among other works, he made engravings for Les Naufrages célèbres by Zurcher and Margollé, published in 1877. In 2005, the musée de Quimper organised a monographic exhibition devoted to his work in collaboration with the musée de Dieppe. Jules Noël died in Mustapha, near Algiers, on 26 March 1881.
