Jean Berger, born near Lyon around 1681, was a French painter active in New France in the early eighteenth century. He arrived in Quebec as a soldier between 1700 and 1704. In 1706 he married Rachel Storer from New England, who had been baptized Marie-Françoise. He subsequently lived in Montreal. Court records illuminate his circumstances, including disputes involving satirical songs; his movements after 1709 remain poorly known.
His artistic practice encompassed religious painting and portraiture. A painted altar frontal made in 1706 for the church of Sainte-Famille on the Île d’Orléans is a documented commission. Several portraits are attributed to him, including Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouville in the McCord Museum. These attributions must be distinguished from securely documented works. His career illustrates the presence of painters who also pursued other occupations in the colony.
This profile brings together identity references for Jean Berger and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
