Jagdish Swaminathan, born in 1928 and deceased in 1994, combined painting, writing and cultural engagement in India. A critic attentive to folk and Indigenous traditions, he advocated a modernity extending beyond Western models. In 1962 he helped establish Group 1890, named after the street number of the house where its members met.
In his Bird, Mountain and Tree series, natural forms seem to float in fields of pure colour, recalling the space of Indian miniature painting. His work within cultural institutions extended this investigation. At the Roopankar Museum in Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, from 1982 he displayed folk and Adivasi artists alongside contemporary artists trained in urban institutions. This approach challenged the hierarchy separating their practices and recognised them as participants in the same contemporary cultural life.
This profile brings together identity references for Jagdish Swaminathan and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
