Manuel Mendive

Born : 1944Documented citizenships : Cuba

Manuel Mendive’s work draws on Santería, a tradition present in his family, and on a recurring attentiveness to the natural world; it takes shape on a range of supports, including the human body. Born in Havana, in the Luyanó district, on 15 December 1944, the Cuban artist has developed a practice in which legends, deities and symbols of Santería appear alongside flowers, birds, roots and zoomorphic creatures. He studied painting and sculpture at the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1963, and also trained in ethnology and folklore at the Cuban Academy of Sciences, as well as in art history at the University of Havana.

Santería, described as a cornerstone of his work, appears through the stories, deities and symbols of this tradition. Nature is another source of inspiration: his motifs include flowers, birds and tree roots, while his scenes may evoke forests inhabited by human and zoomorphic figures. Mendive says that his travels in Africa also helped shape his work. He creates his figures on wood, iron and canvas, as well as on human skin; he is among the first artists in Cuba to explore body art, notably by painting dancers during performances accompanied by Afro-Cuban dances.

His career is marked by early distinctions: at the age of ten, he won first prize in an international children’s painting competition sponsored by the Japanese Morigana Society and UNESCO. He later received the collective Adam Montparnasse de la jeune peinture prize at the 24th Salon de Mai in Paris and the National Prize at the second international festival in Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1970. Exhibitions cited include the Mpapa Gallery in Lusaka in 1982, the 43rd Venice Biennale in 1988 and the Gary Nader Gallery in Coral Gables in 2005. The French Republic appointed him a Knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1994. In 2001, he received the National Visual Arts Prize of the Republic of Cuba. Works by Mendive are held, among other institutions, by the National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba, the Emilio Bacardí Museum in Santiago de Cuba, the Musée d’Art moderne de Paris, the Atlantic Center of Modern Art in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington. Among the documented works is Landschaft, a gouache on paper dated 1992 and signed at the lower left, measuring 57.7 × 77 cm; it was hammered down at CHF 3,400 at a Schuler auction in September 2018.
