Antoniazzo Romano, also known as Antonio di Benedetto Aquili, worked in Rome during the second half of the fifteenth century. His painting combines an interest in naturalism with inherited devotional forms. The Norton Simon Museum’s Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist, dating from about 1460, uses oil and gold leaf. Another Madonna in the museum, accompanied by two cherubim, was painted in tempera around 1475–1480.
In Dublin, a panel of about 1475 shows the Virgin asking God to heal Pope Leo I’s hand; a small scene below completes the miracle’s narrative. The Prado’s Virgin and Child, around 1495, comes from San Giacomo degli Spagnoli in Rome. This fresco, transferred to canvas, also records his work for the city’s churches.
This profile brings together identity references for Antoniazzo Romano and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
