Leonel Góngora, born in Cartago, Colombia, developed a career spanning Latin America, Europe and the United States. Trained in Bogotá, he worked in Mexico City in the early 1960s and participated in the Nueva Presencia group. Periods in Italy and Mexico formed part of a career that also included many years of teaching in the University of Massachusetts art department.
Printmaking is an important strand of his work. MoMA holds several sheets from 1963, including an Untitled colour lithograph issued in an edition of twenty, together with Los siete pecados capitales of 1986. In Dublin, the Irish Museum of Modern Art owns Diana Etrusca, a screenprint of 1981. These collections document the continuity of his graphic practice and the range of techniques he employed over several decades.
This profile brings together identity references for Leonel Góngora and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
