Jacob van Strij (1756–1815), together with his brother Abraham, contributed to Dordrecht's artistic life around 1800. Their involvement in the Pictura society gave importance to study from the model, collective drawing and the examination of works on paper. Landscape formed a central area of his artistic production during this period.
In Landscape with Cows near a Ruin, painted between 1800 and 1815 and held in the Rijksmuseum, oil on panel constructs an Italianate setting: shepherds shelter beneath an old tree, cattle occupy the foreground, and architectural remains accompany them. The same museum owns Landscape with a Polder Mill, a watercolour on paper whose inscription on the reverse locates the motif near Smitshoek. Together, these works reveal two approaches to landscape: pastoral composition and an identified place.
This profile brings together identity references for Jacob van Strij and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
