Anton Hansch

Born : 1813Died : 1876

Anton Hansch (1813–1876), an Austrian landscape painter, trained at the Vienna Academy under Joseph Mössmer. Journeys through the Alps sustained a practice grounded in observation and study. High mountains became his preferred subject, given a pictorial grandeur suited to the tastes of contemporary patrons and collectors and to the presentation of expansive scenery.

In The Grossvenediger, an oil on canvas at Salzburg’s Residenzgalerie, small figures and successive planes establish the landscape’s scale. Theatrical lighting turns the mountain range into a spectacle, while preparatory studies register impressions from the terrain more freely. The Albertina’s Tree Study, a pencil drawing dated between 1850 and 1870, demonstrates this attention to a close subject: another scale of observation accompanies the construction of Alpine panoramas.

This profile brings together identity references for Anton Hansch and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
