Antoine Calbet, born in Engayrac in 1860, was a French painter and illustrator trained in Montpellier and subsequently with Alexandre Cabanel in Paris. The human figure holds an important place in his work, which encompasses portraits, mythological subjects and decorative compositions. His Parisian career remained connected with commissions and collections in his region of origin.
His full-length portrait of Godefroy, Count of Estrades, painted around 1885 or shortly afterwards, belongs to the decoration of the Salle des Illustres in Agen’s town hall. This large oil on canvas represents historical portraiture intended for a civic setting. Léda et le cygne, painted in 1901 and held by Agen’s museum, addresses a different subject. Pastel colours and the figure’s hairstyle bring the ancient myth into the visual world of the Belle Époque.
This profile brings together identity references for Antoine Calbet and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
