Franz von Lenbach

Born : 1836Died : 1904

Franz von Lenbach, born in Schrobenhausen in 1836, who died in Munich in 1904, studied under Carl Theodor von Piloty at the Munich Academy. He visited Rome in 1858 and later copied Old Masters in Italy and Spain for Count Schack. This sustained encounter with earlier painting informed his development before portraiture became the principal field of his success.

From the 1870s, dark tones and concentrated lighting characterised his portraits. His sitters included Bismarck, Wagner and Liszt. Looking towards Rubens, Titian and Veronese did not prevent him from using photography as a working aid. These portraits helped shape the public presentation of political, economic and artistic elites. Technical virtuosity and the staging of the individual worked together to produce a distinctive image of social standing.

This profile brings together identity references for Franz von Lenbach and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
