Ludwig Knaus (1829–1910), born in Wiesbaden and deceased in Berlin, was a German genre painter and portraitist. Throughout his career he maintained close ties with his native city, where he produced numerous works. His large compositions contributed to the popularity of genre painting in the second half of the nineteenth century.
The Golden Wedding of 1859 and The Gambler of 1862 were among the paintings that established his international reputation. Drawing accompanied the development of his paintings and reveals the preparation of figures and compositions. In 2020, the Museum Wiesbaden exhibition Homecoming brought together several works held in the United States and more than a hundred drawings, illuminating both his public success and the work undertaken in his studio.
This profile brings together identity references for Ludwig Knaus and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
