The documented career of Shmuel Shapiro links several places of study in the United States: he studied at the Art School in Hartford from 1939 to 1943, then resumed his studies there in 1946, the year in which he also attended the Museum School in Boston. After serving in the army in Europe from 1943 to 1946, he continued his training at the Art Students League in New York in 1948, in Boston in 1950–1951, and then at the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis in 1952. From 1953 to 1955, he studied at Indiana University in Bloomington, where he was an assistant to Professor Engel; in 1955, a Fulbright grant took him to Paris. Two years later, he taught art there at the American Students and Artist Center.
He settled in Germany in 1960, stayed in Switzerland in 1970–1971, and taught at the University of Halifax, Canada, in 1974. From 1976 to 1983, he lived in Immenried, Germany, and died in Ravensburg in 1983.
