The German painter Ferdinand Keller was born in Carlsruhe on 5 August 1842 and died in Baden-Baden on 8 July 1922. He trained at the Carlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. In 1867, he undertook a Grand Tour that took him to Switzerland, Italy and France; the biographical source also mentions a major journey to Brazil, without dating it. The Death of Philip II, the work with which he achieved his first success in 1867, is dated to that same year.
Keller later taught at the Carlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts, where he was a professor from 1873 to 1913; Christian Wilhelm Allers was among his students. In 1886, he created The Founding of the University of Heidelberg, a fresco intended for the university’s aula. The Apotheosis of Emperor William I, dated 1888, is held at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
Works listed in collections include Coastal Landscape near Rio de Janeiro (1864), at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe; The Carrier Pigeon (1865), at the Musée des Augustins in Freiburg im Breisgau; and the Portrait of Anna Risi (1869), also at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. Selene, dated 1886, and Naiads, dated 1893, complete the documented work titles. An auction catalogue attributes Stefanie, Juli and Pascha, a painting dated 1891, to Keller.
This profile brings together identity references for Ferdinand Keller and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
3 references are documented at Dobiaschofsky, Ketterer. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
