Trained in history painting in Munich and Vienna, Anton Romako developed a career as a portraitist and genre painter in Rome. After returning to Austria, he combined free brushwork with expressive lines. Portrait of Christoph Reisser, painted in 1885, depicts the printer and technical director of the Neue Freie Presse holding his newspaper, with his gaze turned away from the viewer.
In Tegetthoff in the Naval Battle of Lissa, the event’s tension emerges through the gestures of the admiral and sailors gathered on the bridge, rather than through a view of the fleet. Girl Crossing a Mountain Torrent, around 1880–1882, similarly transforms a genre scene into a dangerous situation: the child balances on precarious tree trunks above the turbulent water.
This profile brings together identity references for Anton Romako and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
