Valerio Adami

Born in Bologna in 1935, Valerio Adami has developed a career shaped by artistic training in Milan, a life of travel and works that feature both in exhibition spaces and in public places. He studied under Achille Funi at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. His training also included the studio of Felice Carena and a meeting with Oskar Kokoschka in Venice. From 1958, he led a peripatetic life, residing or working in several cities in Europe, the United States, Latin America, Israel and India. In 1962, he married Camilla Cantoni Mamiani della Rovere. He moved to New York in 1971 and opened his studio there.

From 1970, Adami worked with the Maeght gallery; he exhibited with it in Paris until 1994. In 1978, having returned to New York, he began a series of paintings on mythological themes. Public commissions form another aspect of his work: from 1988, the French state commissioned several works from him, including panels for Austerlitz station. The following year, he created large paintings for the foyer of the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

The Centre Georges-Pompidou devoted a retrospective to him in 1985, which was presented the following year at the Palazzo Reale in Milan. Another retrospective was held in 1990 at the IVAM-Centro Julio González in Valencia. In 2000, the European Drawing Foundation was established in Meina, in the museum of the restored Villa Faraggiana. In 2022, the Templon gallery presented an exhibition in Paris devoted to his recent works.
