Johann Michael Schnitzler (1782–1861) was a German painter from Neuburg an der Kammel. His father, Johann Nepomuk, taught him the fundamentals of drawing. He continued his training while working with various painters before arriving in Munich in 1808. His activities included painting theatrical scenery, connecting him with the artistic life of the Bavarian capital.
He also developed a body of animal paintings and still lifes. Birds from the Menagerie at Nymphenburg, dated 1823 and held by the Bavarian State Painting Collections, illustrates this specialisation. Attention to different species and their arrangement within a composed space connects animal observation with pictorial staging. His career thus brought together the resources of painted decoration and the independent depiction of animals and objects in easel painting.
This profile brings together identity references for Johann Michael Schnitzler and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
