Born in Catalonia, a regional identity he asserted, Salvador Dalí developed a practice that extended well beyond painting: drawing, sculpture, theatrical set design, fashion, print advertising, and cinema also formed part of it. Born in 1904, Dalí died in 1989. He moved across several artistic fields without relinquishing the surrealist imagination that characterises a significant part of his work.
In 1922, Dalí moved to Madrid to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. During his first trip to Paris, in 1926, he discovered Surrealism. The Art Institute of Chicago links his paranoiac-critical method to a deliberate entry into a paranoid state, intended to access the subconscious, and discusses it in particular in relation to the painting Chemist Lifting with Extreme Precaution The Cuticle of a Grand Piano. Later, his interests in science and religion took on an important role in his work, while his surrealist inclination to question everyday norms through unconventional images remained.
In Invention of the Monsters, a 1937 painting, the Art Institute sees a characteristic expression of his Surrealism and of anxieties linked to the Spanish Civil War. With Venus de Milo with Drawers, he intervenes on a half-scale plaster reproduction of the ancient statue: the addition of drawers transforms this familiar figure into a singular object. The Art Institute of Chicago’s collection brings together 40 works by Dalí, including paintings, drawings, prints, objects, and textiles. In 2023, the museum devoted its first solo exhibition to the artist, Salvador Dalí: The Image Disappears, presented from 18 February to 12 June.
