Charles Van Meer, a Belgian painter born in Audregnies on 3 April 1819 and who died in Schaerbeek on 31 October 1865, is documented through genre scenes and his participation in the Belgian triennial salons. Based in rue de la Poste in Schaerbeek, he first exhibited in this context at the Salon of Antwerp in 1843. Interior of a Kitchen, presented that same year, is described as inspired by 17th-century Dutch painters, notably Jan Steen and Adriaen van Ostade.
In 1848, The Game Seller earned him a vermeil medal at the Salon of Brussels. A similar genre scene, The Pantry, was given by Queen Victoria to Prince Albert for his birthday in August 1844, then bequeathed by the Queen to her daughter, Princess Helena, in 1901. Van Meer died unmarried in Schaerbeek after a long illness.
