Gladys Nilsson

Born : 1940Documented citizenships : United States

Born in Chicago in 1940, Gladys Nilsson studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1966 she joined five other artists in the first Hairy Who exhibitions, which brought greater visibility to their distinctive figurative languages. Her watercolours and collages combine careful construction with sinuous figures and densely occupied surfaces. Humour and visual play often accompany an exploration of human sexuality and its contradictions. A solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1973 marks an important point in her career. She also returned to her former school to teach from 1990, adding the transmission of artistic experience to a practice presented in numerous exhibitions.

This profile brings together identity references for Gladys Nilsson and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
