Giulio Turcato (1912–1995), born in Mantua, received his artistic training in Venice and participated in group exhibitions from 1932. During the war, he joined the antifascist resistance. In 1947, he was among the founders of Forma 1 and signed the Manifesto of Formalism; in 1952, he joined the Group of Eight Italian Painters brought together by Lionello Venturi. Some titles refer to war, factories or political life, while the pictorial construction moves away from recognisable description. During the 1960s, Turcato combined collage and painting and worked on large, nearly monochrome compositions, such as the Triptyque phosphorescent of 1965. His experiments extended to abstract sculptures with slender forms and vivid colours. He died in Rome in 1995.
This profile brings together identity references for Giulio Turcato and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
