Oswaldo Guayasamín was born in Quito in 1919 and died in 1999. He trained as a painter and sculptor at the art school in his native city and held his first exhibition in 1942. His expressionist work addressed poverty, suffering and twentieth-century violence, giving a humanist purpose to his representations of Latin American people.
Mural de la selva, of 1949, is painted in casein on wood. His mural practice also reached public spaces, including UNESCO headquarters in Paris and Madrid’s airport. In La Edad de la Ira, he developed an extensive cycle addressing crimes against humanity. The Capilla del Hombre, conceived on his initiative in Quito and opened in 2002, continues this engagement with the tragic history of Latin America.
