Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow

Died : 1862

Wilhelm von Schadow was a German painter associated with the Nazarenes and the Düsseldorf School. Born in Berlin, the son of sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow, he practised portraiture and religious painting. From 1826 to 1859 he directed the Düsseldorf Academy, whose teaching gained international influence. He upheld the central position of history painting while landscape and scenes of everyday life developed around him.

His Saint Barbara of 1844, held by the Clemens Sels Museum in Neuss, exemplifies the renewal of devotional imagery. The figure and her upward gaze recall Raphael’s Saint Catherine. This reference combines naturalistic observation with a Christian ideal. Works in the Städel, including The Repentance of Saint Peter, further document a practice centred on the human figure and sacred narrative.

This profile brings together identity references for Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
