Born in Birmingham in 1939, Peter Phillips is an English artist associated with Pop Art, whose practice extends from oil painting to collage, sculpture and architecture, as well as multimedia compositions. Galerie Champetier describes his paintings as drawing on commercial imagery and using dynamic montages, in an advertising style it characterises as “aggressive and tense”. The diversity of his techniques is also evident in Gefährliches Spiel, a work from 1982 described in an auction catalogue as an oil-and-wood collage on paper, signed and dated by the artist.
From 1959 to 1962, he studied at the Royal College of Art in London, alongside Peter Blake, David Hockney and Allen Jones. His work was presented at the Paris Biennale in 1963, and the following year was included in a touring exhibition devoted to Pop Art, shown in The Hague, Vienna and Berlin. After receiving the Harkness Fellowship in 1964, Phillips moved to New York, where his first solo exhibition was organised in 1965 at Galerie Kornblee. In 1968 and 1969, he was a visiting professor at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg.
His work was the subject of a retrospective at the Westfälischer Kunstverein in Münster in 1972, followed by one at the Tate Gallery in London in 1976. In 2002, an exhibition was devoted to him at the Galleria Civica di Modena, in Italy. Peter Phillips died in 2025.
