SwissArtGallery · Documented identity
Initially trained in wood engraving, Maximilien Luce also attended evening classes in drawing and modelling before working as an engraver in Eugène Froment’s workshop. The decline in opportunities for wood engraving associated with zincography subsequently led him to devote himself entirely to painting. In 1885, in Lagny-sur-Marne, he began painting in a Divisionist manner and worked within Neo-Impressionism for around fifteen years. At the Salon des indépendants in spring 1887, he exhibited seven Divisionist canvases.
Paul Signac bought La Toilette from him. In 1899, Luce presented a solo exhibition at the Galerie Durand-Ruel, from 16 October to 1 November. At the beginning of the 20th century, he abandoned dots of colour and adopted a more traditional manner of painting, while retaining, according to the source, the harmony and luminosity of his early period. Between 1902 and 1912, he painted Paris’s major construction sites; the Art Institute of Chicago catalogue also lists La Sainte-Chapelle (1902) under his name, as well as Study for Mazas and Mazas, both dated 1894.
La Semaine sanglante is another subject in his work: he devoted around ten canvases to it, including Une rue de Paris en mai 1871 (1903-1905), Le 18 mars, place Pigalle (1906) and Vive la Commune (c. 1910). A libertarian activist, Luce published his first political drawing in La Vie moderne on 24 December 1887.
This profile brings together identity references for Maximilien Luce and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
54 references are documented at Dobiaschofsky, DognyAuction, Kornfeld, Genève Enchères, Artcurial Beurret Bailly Widmer, Schuler, Germann, Piguet. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
