Paul Bril

Died : 1626

Born in Antwerp around 1554, Paul Bril spent most of his career in Rome, where he joined his brother Matthijs. His landscapes combine Flemish traditions with the study of Italian painting, particularly the work of Annibale Carracci. He produced both frescoes and small pictures, sometimes collaborating with painters of figures. Ancient architecture informed his drawings and became part of the imaginary settings he constructed in his paintings.

Fantastic Landscape of 1598, in the National Galleries of Scotland, is painted in oil on copper. Successive bands of colour create depth, moving from a brown foreground through intermediate greens to distant blues. Rocks, twisting tree trunks and a river valley accompany classical fragments. His paintings, and the prints that circulated their designs, helped transmit this approach to landscape to northern artists working in Italy.

This profile brings together identity references for Paul Bril and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
