SwissArtGallery · Documented identity
Geneviève Claisse is a geometric abstract painter whose work explores, among other things, the theme of the circle, which appeared in 1964 under the title Terre-siècle. Born on 17 July 1935 in Quiévy, in the Nord, she turned to painting after discovering the magazine Art d’aujourd’hui, which her biography describes as a platform for geometric abstraction.
She met Auguste Herbin in 1953—they were related—and became his assistant in 1959, after he had suffered hemiplegia. Her first exhibitions took place in 1958 in Paris and Cambrai. The theme of circles continued in the screenprint album Cercles, published in 1967; in January of that year, the Musée des beaux-arts de La Chaux-de-Fonds presented works spanning the previous ten years. Her work also features in monumental projects: her biography credits her with a mural ensemble for the hall of the SCAC company in Puteaux, as well as the decoration of the basin of the French pavilion at the Montreal World’s Fair.
In 1993, Claisse published a catalogue raisonné of Auguste Herbin’s work, for which she received the prix Élie-Faure in 1994. In 2015, the Musée Matisse in Le Cateau-Cambrésis presented a retrospective of her work.
This profile brings together identity references for Geneviève Claisse and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
29 references are documented at Artcurial Beurret Bailly Widmer, Dobiaschofsky, Germann, Kornfeld, Lempertz. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
