James Moore, born in Chico, California, in 1946, trained at Art Center College of Design, receiving a painting degree in 1973 and a master’s degree in 1974. His work belongs to contemporary American realism, with particular attention to ordinary objects and still life.
Fruit, containers and drapery are recurring subjects, as in Red plums in a bucket (1995) and 3 Melons (1996). Restrained settings focus attention on the presence of things. Moore exhibited regularly at New York’s Schmidt-Bingham Gallery between 1987 and 2000. He participated in New Horizons in American Realism in 1991–1992. His solo exhibition Simple•Quiet•Still, held at Humboldt State University’s First Street Gallery in 2003, highlighted this contemplative direction in his work.
