Diango Hernández, born in Sancti Spíritus in 1970, studied industrial design in Havana. With Ordo Amoris Cabinet, founded in 1994, he transformed unusable everyday objects into assemblages and installations. This practice, arising from material scarcity, informed his attention to the traces of Cuban history. His drawings also combine words and images: comments, lines and colours work together upon the viewer’s imagination.
After moving to Europe in 2003, Hernández continued to explore belonging and memory. For Bañistas, presented at the Kestner Gesellschaft in 2022–2023, a mural and three sculptures connected Havana’s waves with the building’s former swimming pool. These sculptures materialise works from Instopia, initially conceived as virtual artworks and digitally inserted by the artist into photographs of interiors.
This profile brings together identity references for Diango Hernández and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
