A painter, pastellist and draughtsman, Augustin Grass-Mick worked in portraiture, urban scenes and landscape as well as press illustration; his career thus encompassed several genres and modes of dissemination. Born in Paris in 1873 and died in Marseille in 1963, he was also known as Augustin Nicolas Grasmick. From late 1893, he took part in the second period of Le Phare littéraire et artistique. From 1898, he worked as a press illustrator and supplied work to several periodicals, including Le Cri de Paris, Le Charivari, Le Sourire and Le Journal pour tous.
From 1909 to 1913, Grass-Mick returned to the Salon d’Automne, of which he became a member; there he presented gouaches of interiors and still lifes, as well as portraits and landscapes. Marseille, quai de la Fraternité, dated 1912, is listed as an oil on panel measuring 20 × 30 cm and noted as being in a private collection. Shortly before the First World War, he settled in Marseille and contributed to the Journal de Marseille. In that city, he wrote essays on Daumier’s drawings and organised an exhibition on the subject.
Other listed works include Le parc de la Belle Gabrielle, a signed and located oil on canvas measuring 41 × 33 cm, and La loge, a signed oil on paper measuring 15 × 15 cm. Illustrated books are attributed to him, including La Glorieuse Canaille by Guy de Téramond, published in 1902, and La Ville des santons by Elzéard Rougier, published in 1927.
His interest in art history is also reflected in two publications listed under his name: La Lumière sur Daumier, in 1931, and De la lumière sur Puget, in 1934. His career was the subject of a study by Édith Guihéneux-Nolin, De Montmartre à Marseille, chronique d'un peintre oublié : Augustin Grasmick dit Grass-Mick, published in 2016.
