French painter, draughtsman and decorator, Jean-Charles Duval was born in Paris on 3 April 1880 and died there on 11 December 1963. The biographical entry describes him as an Orientalist and presents him as a friend of Edgar Degas.
His travels took him to Constantine, Algeria, in 1908, then to Damascus, Syria, in 1924, as part of an official mission for the Institut français d’art musulman. He was a member of the Salon des Tuileries and the Société nationale des beaux-arts.
In 1910–1911, he depicted artists and performances of the Ballets russes. He also depicted dancers and performances of the Opéra de Paris. In 1965, the Bibliothèque-musée de l’Opéra acquired forty sketches of performance scenes. In 1981, his widow, Isabelle Duval, donated around 250 drawings depicting 41 performances and artists of the Ballets russes and the Opéra de Paris.
