A landscape painter, figure draughtsman and etcher, Deodat Roger (1726–1821) is also described as a graphic artist and portrait miniaturist. His documented practice thus brings together landscape and figure with several forms of drawing and printmaking. Sources place him in Vienna towards the end of the 18th century. According to a reported account, he drew landscapes populated with figures there, which he then most often executed in ink.
A stay in Paris around 1779 is mentioned with reservation: according to the Thieme-Becker dictionary, Roger probably stayed there and exhibited his drawings. The listed works attest to varied subjects and techniques. A Rocky Landscape of 1790, executed in pen, measures 32.6 × 49.7 cm; a Couple of Shepherds of 1788, executed with a brush, measures 27 × 40.5 cm. A River Landscape is also listed in chalk. Shepherd and society scenes are among the subjects associated with his name: a Shepherd Scene measures 16.8 × 22 cm, and an Elegant Society, 33.4 × 42.7 cm. Ten of Roger’s drawings in brown ink are recorded in the collection of the Strasbourg museum. A group entitled “Turkish Costumes”, comprising four drawings and dated 1818, was presented under his name. In addition, a lot attributed to Roger describes a Pastoral Scene in ink and charcoal, signed and dated 1817, on paper, measuring 17 × 23 cm.
This profile brings together identity references for Deodat Roger and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
